Charitable contributions to UCGIS
by Jack Sanders

Generous contributions provided a total of $1,400 in December 2005, the first month of the UCGIS campaign to raise funds to support student travel awards at the Summer Assembly. As a 501(c)(3) organization, UCGIS is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions, just as any other similar charitable, scientific, educational, or religious organization.

Graduate students whose research is selected for presentation at the Summer Assembly receive $800 to help defray the cost of their travel related expenses. With 16-20 students participating, this very important program can cost $14,000-$18,000 each year. The Board’s goal is to raise all of that amount from charitable contributions.

Anyone wishing to help support the 2006 Student Paper Awards can go to the UCGIS web site to donate online, or checks can be sent to the UCGIS office in Alexandria. The web link is http://www.ucgis.org/donations .

This initiative provides a perfect chance to help support the recognition and continuing professional development of our top graduate students. The board urges everyone, from member institutions and elsewhere, to make a generous contribution.
