Intelligence Analysis Faculty Position Advertisement
James Madison University (JMU) seeks applicants for two faculty positions in its Bachelor’s Degree Program in Intelligence Analysis (IA): Position 1) critical thinking and analytic methodology, and Position 2) analytic methodology with an emphasis in computational tools and techniques. Both appointments will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level and will reside within the larger Department of Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT).
JMU is a comprehensive university, with an enrollment of approximately 18,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students, located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, approximately 2 hours from Washington, D.C., Richmond, and Roanoke. JMU is regarded as one of the finest universities in the nation and has been cited in U.S. News and World Report, Changing Times, and Money Magazine as an outstanding public university and as one of the nation’s top 35 universities for undergraduate research.
The IA program is in its sixth year and is a rapidly growing program that educates a new generation of analysts capable of handling current and future challenges in national security and competitive intelligence. The program emphasizes advanced critical thinking, analytic writing, technological proficiency, and situational understanding. The IA program’s graduates are well positioned for careers as analysts in the public or the private sector and have been very successful in securing positions within the Intelligence Community, at prominent Defense Contractors, as well as within the military, private corporations and law enforcement.
The ideal candidates will have substantial experience as all-source intelligence analysts, demonstrated ability in teaching or training and expertise in analytical methodologies. Both positions involve serving as colleagues within the university and as active advocates for the IA program to the Intelligence Community. Individuals in these positions must understand, embrace and advocate the program’s multi-disciplinary approach. A Ph.D. is desirable (and required for a tenure-track appointment), but qualified candidates with a Master’s degree and substantial experience in the field are also strongly encouraged to apply for the positions (on a 3 year Renewable Term contract). These positions are 9-month appointments with a typical teaching load of 3 courses per semester. For Position 1, at least half of the annual six-course load will be in advanced critical thinking (hypothesis testing, causal analysis, futures analysis, and strategy assessment). For Position 2, at least half of the annual load will be in courses on databases with data mining and introductory programming (experience with automated intelligence information processing systems such as Analyst Notebook or Pathfinder and/or geospatial tools is a plus). The remaining courses for both positions will depend on the candidate’s expertise and support the core of the IA program. Also, depending on their interest and background, successful candidates may have opportunities to satisfy part of their course load in the Geographic Science (GS) or Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) undergraduate programs that are housed in the same department as IA. Both positions require an active program of scholarly activity that enriches the undergraduate program and advances the field of intelligence analysis.
