What are the benefits of advancing to UCGIS Fellow?
- Recognition as a leader in the geographic information science and technology profession, who has attained distinction and has made an ongoing commitment to – and to supporting UCGIS’s leadership in – the profession.
- Fellows receive an exclusive and impressive Fellow wall plaque, which is included with a distinctive Fellow pin and ready-made press release sent to all newly elected Fellows.
- Increased visibility as a UCGIS Fellow, evidenced by a news column in the UCGIS newsletter, containing bios and pictures of newly elected Fellows
- The Fellows, as a group, have opportunities to provide advice and direction to the UCGIS organization and also the opportunity to champion special projects in consultation with the UCGIS leadership
Is there a Nomination Form?
In 2013, the guidelines have been greatly simplified. There is no form as such. However, a signed nomination letter is still required. The nomination letter should make the case for why a particular individual should be honored with the UCGIS Fellow designation.
Are handwritten documents acceptable?
Handwritten documents will not be accepted.
What is the Application Deadline?
In 2013, the deadline for nominations is February 1st, 2013. This deadline will not be changed.
Are faxed documents acceptable?
Faxes are not acceptable.

Is Self-nomination acceptable?
Self-nomination is not permitted.
Can I nominate my current employer / supervisor / dissertation advisor?
These types of nominations are not encouraged. However, there are many special circumstances where it may become necessary. Therefore, we encourage the nominator to have a preliminary conversation with Dr. Lynn Usery (firstname.lastname@example.org) to discuss the specific nomination before beginning work.
When will the announcement of newly elected Fellows be made?
Elected Fellows and their nominators will be notified by the UCGIS President on or about April 15th, 2013.
The formal announcements and recognition will occur at the UCGIS Symposium to be held May 21st to 23rd, 2013 in Washington DC.
Is the a limit to the number of new Fellows that may be recommended each year?
The total number of new Fellow recommendations in any one year will not exceed six individuals.
